How It Works

The U.S. Navy body fat formula estimates your body fat percentage from circumference measurements. For men, it uses waist and neck circumference relative to height. For women, it adds hip circumference. While not as precise as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, the Navy method is free, repeatable, and accurate to within about 3 percentage points for most people. Essential fat is the minimum needed for basic physiological functions — about 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women. Athletes typically carry 6-13% (men) or 14-20% (women). For general fitness, 14-17% (men) or 21-24% (women) is considered fit. Tracking body fat percentage over time is more useful than tracking weight alone because it tells you whether you are losing fat or muscle.
