How It Works
There is no single "ideal weight" formula that works for everyone. The four most commonly used formulas were developed for different populations and purposes. The Devine formula (1974) was originally created for drug dosage calculations. The Robinson formula (1983) refined Devine with updated data. The Miller formula (1983) tends to give slightly higher values. The Hamwi formula (1964) is one of the oldest and simplest. All of them are based on height and gender, so they do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. Use these numbers as rough guidelines and pair them with body fat percentage or BMI for a more complete picture.
