How It Works

The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) measures how fat is distributed around your body. You calculate it by dividing your waist circumference by your hip circumference. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines abdominal obesity as a WHR above 0.90 for men and above 0.85 for women. People who carry more fat around the waist (apple shape) have higher risks of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke compared to those who carry fat around the hips (pear shape). This is because abdominal fat, especially visceral fat around your organs, is metabolically active and releases inflammatory substances. WHR is considered a better predictor of cardiovascular disease than BMI alone.
